On July 1, 2024, Hungary is set to assume the rotating presidency of the European Union. That’s a problem. Because then, of all people, the man who tramples European values is supposed to be sitting in the EU’s chief seat: Viktor Orbán.

This man cannot represent us Europeans. Viktor Orban cannot be our president. That’s why we call on Council President Charles Michel to suspend the Hungarian presidency.

Over the past 14 years, Viktor Orbán has systematically transformed Hungary into an autocracy. Billions of EU funding have disappeared in corrupt channels. The rights of refugees and LGBTQI+ persons are being disregarded. Moreover, the Orbán government continues to maintain friendly relations with the Kremlin and with former US President Donald Trump. For the EU, this is harmful: he blackmails the EU with his veto!

We must not allow the government of Viktor Orbán to steer the destiny of the European Union for half a year – not at such a pivotal moment!

The presidency of the Council rotates every six months and is not merely ceremonial. Here, the guidelines of European policy are determined, summit agendas are set, and negotiations are led. Viktor Orbán would thus be at the helm of power in Europe at a crucial phase: shortly after the European elections, when the most important top jobs in the EU are being allocated and a shift to the right in EU politics must be prevented.

Worse and potentially more dangerous: Viktor Orbán could delay important sanctions against Putin and prevent a unified European response to a possible victory of Donald Trump in the US elections in the fall 2024.

Orbán is due to take over the presidency on 1 July. We cannot let that happen! It is time to stop him.

Therefore: Sign our petition. Because if we build as much pressure as possible, then we can still prevent Viktor Orbán from taking the helm of the EU.
