NGOs and Lobbying in Brussels – Press Briefing | Tuesday, February 4th, 10:00

Over the past weeks, NGOs, their funding, and their operations have been debated, particularly by right wing politicians. Civil society organizations in Brussels were not only targeted during a plenary debate in the European Parliament, but are now facing increasing political attacks. The EU Commission’s LIFE programme, which funds environmental and climate initiatives, has become a particular focus of criticism. The debate around NGO funding and advocacy is expected to intensify in the coming weeks, especially in the context of the EU Commission’s budget discharge process and discussions on the next EU budget.

To bring clarity to the debate and address the misinformation, accusations, and speculation surrounding NGOs, I invite you to this press briefing, where we will tackle key questions, including:

  • Did the EU Commission instruct NGOs to lobby the European Parliament? Have NGOs received EU funding for lobbying activities?
  • Is it unusual for NGOs to engage in advocacy while receiving public funding?
  • What other entities or organizations receive EU funding while engaging in advocacy towards EU institutions? Is this a common practice?
  • Why are civil society organizations in Brussels being targeted? What is the underlying agenda?
  • What political developments should be watched in the coming weeks? Could parliamentary procedures lead to changes in how NGOs operate in Brussels?
  • Are there parallels between the current attacks on NGOs in Brussels and the tactics to silence civil society for example in Hungary?

More

35,000 lobbyists are attempting to influence EU laws. Commissioners switch position into the private sector. MPs work as lobbyists on a part-time basis. From my time at Transparency International I know that the EU is still better than the member states in many respects.  However, there is also a need for far more transparency in the EU.
