Hungary's Prime Minister in the European Parliament: Viktor Orban comes under intense fire

Intense criticism of Viktor Orban in the European Parliament! Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban today presented the priorities of the Hungarian Council Presidency in a routine address. After a rather lackluster speech, he was sharply attacked by Ursula von der Leyen and several Members of the European Parliament. The Commission President, in particular, criticized Orban in unusually harsh terms for his dismantling of democracy and his pro-Putin stance. A visibly agitated Viktor Orban responded with attacks on both the EU Commission and the European Parliament. Particularly noteworthy in the German context is that speakers from the Alliance, including Sahra Wagenknecht, expressed support for Viktor Orban in the European Parliament.

Daniel Freund, a member of the Greens in the European Parliament, commented:

“This was one of the most lively debates this Parliament has seen in recent years. Viktor Orban faced strong criticism for his corruption and populism. Pro-European forces in the European Parliament made it very clear to him today that he will not find any majorities for his anti-democratic course. Orban must primarily justify himself for his corruption. 14 billion euros have disappeared since he has been in power in Hungary. We want our money back.”

“Von der Leyen’s harsh words towards Orban hopefully signal a shift in the EU Commission. Viktor Orban is one of the greatest threats to our democracy and Europe’s unity. The Commission must not stop at fiery speeches and concerned letters but must finally take action and enforce real consequences for corruption in Hungary and the erosion of the rule of law. It is time to freeze all EU funds for Orban and his clique.”

The EU can be our best tool in the fight against corruption, money laundering and tax evasion. But it must also be used in the right way. In the future, the EU should fight corruption much more decisively. That is why I have set up an Intergroup against corruption in the European Parliament.
