Motion of no confidence against Von der Leyen: Weber’s cozying up to the far right has failed

Today, the European Parliament is discussing a motion of no confidence against Ursula von der Leyen’s Commission, initiated by far-right and Europe-hostile Members of Parliament. The vote will take place Thursday at noon. The MEPs argue a lack of transparency, Von der Leyen’s secret text messages, and the supposed Commission’s interference in the Romanian elections.

Daniel Freund, Green MEP, comments:

“The motion of no confidence was initiated and primarily supported by ECR MEPs. This is exactly the group that Manfred Weber and his EPP group have systematically legitimized and included in power over recent years. Weber had ensured that the ECR provides a Vice-President of the Commission and also of the Parliament. Weber’s cooperation with these right-wing enemies of Europe is now backfiring. If Weber wants stable majorities, he must find majorities with the pro-European groups.

It is outrageous that MEPs from AfD, FPÖ, and Le Pen’s Rassemblement National (RN) are now abusing transparency as the reason for their distrust. After Le Pen was recently convicted of fraud amounting to 4.6 million euros, it became public last week that AfD, FPÖ, and other members of the former ID group have also allegedly embezzled many millions. Together with Weber’s EPP, they have repeatedly obstructed transparency and integrity in recent months, for example by blocking independent oversight through the EU Ethics Committee. The far-right’s supposed commitment to transparency is nothing but hypocrisy.”
