Key Issues

Our NRW

I grew up in Aachen. I know firsthand how deeply our region is connected to Europe. For many people, borders no longer play a role in daily life – whether working, studying, or traveling. NRW, in particular, benefits from a strong European single market, open borders, and collaborative partnerships. That’s why we need a Europe that protects, invests, and actively drives change.

Together with Alexandra Geese, I co-lead the delegation of Green MEPs from NRW. Our goal: a modern, climate-neutral, and fair North Rhine-Westphalia within a strong Europe.

The challenges are immense: The climate crisis is hitting NRW harder than ever, with droughts, heatwaves, and flooding. At the same time, many industrial regions face profound transformation. The shift toward climate-friendly industry and renewable energy isn’t just an ecological necessity – it’s an economic opportunity for good jobs and sustainable prosperity.

But change doesn’t happen on its own. Fossil fuel lobbyists and far-right forces continue to try to slow progress and divide Europe. That’s why, in Brussels, we’re fighting for ambitious climate action, fair competition, independent European energy supply, and investments in the future of our regions.
For me, one thing is clear: A strong, green Europe is the foundation for a livable NRW – today and for generations to come.
