Jokes need freedom of speech: An invitation to Jimmy Kimmel

Late-night legend Jimmy Kimmel is back on air after a brief break that made headlines in the U.S. – and in Europe, too. The case is yet another reminder of what freedom of speech really looks like in Trump’s America. But watching the coverage, I had an idea: Kimmel got the jokes, we’ve got freedom of speech. It’s a perfect match. Let’s host Jimmy Kimmel in Brussels. So I sent out an invitation. You can read the letter here:

Dear Jimmy,

Europe is glad you’re back on air. We followed the coverage around your brief absence with concern. Which is why I’d like to invite you to Brussels and to speak in the European Parliament. You have the jokes, we have freedom of speech and rule of law. A perfect match.

I’m Daniel Freund, a German Member of the European Parliament with the Greens. We’re a place where 27 nations argue about cheese labelling, corruption, and climate policy — often in 24 languages, simultaneously. If you think U.S. politics is entertaining, wait until you see a Hungarian far-right MEP argue with a Finnish Green about carbon border adjustments.

On a more serious note: You’ve interviewed presidents, roasted celebrities, and made millions of Americans laugh about things that weren’t funny until you said them. But have you ever tried the EU?

This would be your unique opportunity to bring humor to Parliament. Our speeches here are a comedic wasteland – an area badly in need of development work. So come and share your thoughts on democracy, media, and maybe how on earth we can explain Europe to Trump – or Trump to Europe.

I promise: no filibusters, no caucuses, and we’ll keep the wine flowing (it’s EU-subsidized, after all). Consider it a chance to upgrade from Hollywood Boulevard to Boulevard Léopold III. Brussels may not have palm trees, but we do have waffles.

Looking forward to (hopefully) welcoming you to the most underrated comedy venue in Europe.

With green regards,

Daniel Freund
Member of the European Parliament
The Greens/EFA

P.S. Jon Stewart was here once and I hear he’s still raving about it.

We are waiting to hear from Jimmy’s management and will let you know once we’ve got a response.
